ADMINISTRATION
A board of ten directors forms the governing body of Gaden Shartse. While the president of the governing body is chosen directly by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, all his counselors and other functionaries are elected by vote from all the resident members of Shartse above the age of eighteen. In addition to them, two officers are elected to oversee all the administrative and academic programs of the centre. Gaden Shartse Monastic College is purely voluntary seat for Tibetan Learning. It is a registered non-profit educational and cultural center. It is maintained through purely donations and agriculture, (the eighty-four acres of farming land originally allocated to the first members of Shartse still used) the mainstay of our economic support. Unlike other educational centres of its kind, it does not have grants or funds from any governmental body. Donations and income raised through the sale of crops are channeled to run the daily necessities of our centre. Since droughts can affect crop production, small loans are arranged from time to time meet daily requirements and to see the community through difficult financial times. |
